Debunking Common Misconceptions About Chiropractic Care

What is Chiropractic Care?

In this episode, Dr. Phil explains that chiropractic care involves extensive schooling and offers a holistic approach different from medical care. Chiropractors focus on the spine and the central nervous system, emphasizing non-pharmacological treatments. They do not prescribe medication, focusing instead on the structure of the body and promoting natural healing.

Initially set on a path in education, an injury led him to discover chiropractic care. After experiencing a life-changing recovery through chiropractic treatment, Dr. Phil decided to pursue chiropractic studies at Life University in Marietta, Georgia. Now, he has about 25 years of professional experience treating personal injuries and more through chiropractic care.

A Patient-Centered, Drug-Free Approach After Auto Accidents

Chiropractic care is particularly relevant for individuals involved in auto accidents. Dr. Phil explains that spinal injuries, such as whiplash, are common in these scenarios. Chiropractors are specialists in the function of the spine and are equipped to handle such injuries. They also refer patients for diagnostic testing, like X-rays and MRIs if needed.

Dr. Phil emphasizes a patient-centered approach, starting with a comprehensive evaluation to tailor treatments to each individual. Initial treatments are gentle, incorporating various therapies like hot packs, cold packs, and electric muscle stimulation, among others. The goal is to provide comfort and start the healing process gently without the fear of traditional "cracking" methods.

Chiropractic care doesn't operate in isolation. Dr. Phil collaborates with various medical professionals for a comprehensive approach to patient care. This includes referrals for neurological evaluations, pain management, and orthopedic assessments as needed. This holistic approach ensures patients receive the best possible care tailored to their needs.

A few significant benefits of chiropractic care are the avoidance of addictive pain medications and ability to have insurance (both auto and health) cover treatment costs. Dr. Phil mentions that chiropractic care offers a drug-free approach, providing effective pain relief and promoting long-term health without the risk of addiction.

Most insurance companies, including personal injury protection (PIP) in auto accidents, cover chiropractic care. Secondary health insurance can also be billed once PIP benefits are exhausted. His office is set up to effectively handle billing to ensure minimal out-of-pocket expenses for patients.

So, Why Don't More People Take Advantage of Chiropractic Treatment?

Chiropractic care can be an effective and holistic approach to treating various injuries and conditions. While misconceptions may deter some from seeking this form of treatment, understanding the truth can open up new pathways for healing. Throughout the episode, Jessica, Chris and Dr. Phil address several misconceptions that people have about chiropractic care, especially for those with prior medical histories.

Here are a few more debunks if you're on the fence about whether chiropractic care can help you. Hall shares her personal concerns about receiving chiropractic care due to past injuries and surgeries.

1. Misconception: Chiropractors Aren’t “Real” Doctors

One of the most widespread myths is that chiropractors aren’t “real” doctors. While it’s true that chiropractors don’t hold an MD (Medical Doctor) degree, they do earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree after extensive training. Chiropractic education involves a minimum of seven to eight years of higher education, including courses in anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation, and neurology, as well as hands-on clinical training. Chiropractors are highly skilled professionals specializing in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal issues, making them very qualified to help with injury-related care.

2. Misconception: Chiropractic Care is Only for Back Pain

While chiropractic care is often associated with back pain relief, it goes far beyond that. Chiropractors treat a wide variety of injuries and conditions, including neck pain, headaches, joint issues, and even repetitive strain injuries. Additionally, chiropractic treatment can help alleviate the symptoms of car accidents, sports injuries, and workplace injuries by focusing on the alignment and function of the musculoskeletal system. Adjustments help promote the body’s natural healing processes and can relieve discomfort throughout the entire body.

3. Misconception: Chiropractors Only “Crack” Your Back

Chiropractors are best known for spinal manipulations (or “adjustments”), but their treatment toolbox extends well beyond cracking joints. Chiropractic care often includes a combination of therapies such as:

  • Soft Tissue Therapy: Massage techniques to release muscle tension.

  • Exercise Therapy: Tailored exercises to build strength and improve mobility.

  • Physical Therapy Techniques: Stretching and other rehab exercises.

  • Posture Education: Guidance on how to improve posture in daily activities.

  • Lifestyle Counseling: Advice on diet, sleep, and general wellness.

By using a variety of treatment methods, chiropractors can create a holistic, customized care plan designed to aid in full recovery.

4. Misconception: Chiropractic Adjustments are Dangerous

Many people worry that chiropractic adjustments are dangerous, especially when it involves the neck. However, the reality is that chiropractic care is generally very safe when performed by a licensed, trained professional. Chiropractors undergo years of training to safely perform spinal manipulations and adjustments. Although every medical treatment has some risk, studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments have a low risk of adverse effects, and they are far less risky than many alternative treatments, such as surgery or long-term medication use.

5. Misconception: Chiropractic Care Isn’t Evidence-Based

Some skeptics argue that chiropractic care lacks scientific support. However, research has consistently shown the benefits of chiropractic treatment for various conditions, especially for lower back pain, neck pain, and certain types of headaches. Many peer-reviewed studies indicate that chiropractic care can improve function, reduce pain, and enhance the quality of life for patients suffering from musculoskeletal injuries. Additionally, chiropractic treatment is often recommended as a part of a comprehensive care plan that includes physical therapy and other conventional treatments.

6. Misconception: Once You Start Chiropractic Care, You Have to Keep Going Forever

It’s true that many patients choose to continue chiropractic care even after their initial pain has subsided, but this isn’t because chiropractic care is “addictive” or because you have to keep going. Chiropractic care can provide ongoing benefits for maintaining spinal health, improving mobility, and reducing stress, which is why some people choose to continue with regular appointments. For injury treatments, chiropractors typically provide a specific care plan designed to meet your short-term recovery goals. Once these goals are met, ongoing care is entirely optional.

7. Misconception: Chiropractic Care is Expensive

Cost is a valid concern for anyone seeking healthcare treatment. However, chiropractic care can actually be a cost-effective solution, particularly when compared to surgery or long-term prescription medications. Many health insurance plans cover chiropractic services, making it affordable for a significant number of people. Additionally, chiropractors may offer various payment options or plans that make treatments more accessible. Chiropractic care focuses on non-invasive treatment, often reducing the need for expensive surgeries or medications down the road.

8. Misconception: Chiropractic Care Can’t Treat Injuries Caused by Trauma

While chiropractic care is commonly associated with repetitive strain injuries and chronic pain, it can also play a significant role in recovery from traumatic injuries, like car accidents or sports injuries. Chiropractors use gentle, precise adjustments and other therapies to improve alignment, restore function, and reduce pain in areas affected by trauma. However, in cases of severe trauma, chiropractors often work in tandem with other healthcare providers, such as physical therapists, orthopedic specialists, or primary care doctors, to ensure a well-rounded treatment plan.

Dr. Phil Scheets

Dr. Phil Scheets

From a young age, Dr. Phil knew he wanted to pursue a career in the medical field and was a pre-med student in college—until he realized he wasn't fond of the sight of blood. After graduation, he worked as a high school teacher and baseball coach, supplementing his income by loading trucks.

During this time, Dr. Phil sustained an injury in a forklift accident, prompting him to seek care from conventional medical doctors. For eight months, he suffered from debilitating pain without any answers from his physicians, except for a recommendation for spinal surgery. Unexpectedly, he received a call from a local chiropractic office offering a free consultation. With nothing to lose, he decided to give it a try.

Dr. Phil knew he had found his true calling when chiropractic care transformed his life. Instead of applying for a master's program in education, he enrolled in a chiropractic college.

After 18 years in New Jersey, Dr Phil relocated to Florida in 2018 and helped build one of the top performing franchises in the country.  He transitioned back into private practice, opening Duval Spine & Rehab in July 2023 and he is once again honored to serve patients at his new office.  Dr. Phil brings 25 years of patient care to help each individual patient attain their highest state of health and recovery from injuries through highly skilled chiropractic and physiotherapeutic care.
