Operation Barnabas: How Mentorship, Faith, and Community Are Changing Veterans’ Lives

In Episode 67 of the Collective Perspective Podcast, hosts Jeff Aldrich and Travis Eadens sit down with John Green, founder of Operation Barnabas, to tell a powerful story about service after service. This episode isn’t just about a nonprofit—it’s about what happens when mentorship, faith, and community collide to restore dignity, purpose, and hope for veterans and first responders.

Here is a summary of the main concepts discussed on this episode:

What Makes Operation Barnabas Different

Founded in 2017 in Northeast Florida, Operation Barnabas was built on a simple but radical idea: no one heals alone. The organization focuses on veterans who are incarcerated, homeless, or at risk, using a one-to-one mentorship model that meets people exactly where they are.

Rather than offering quick fixes, Operation Barnabas provides something deeper — time, consistency, and accountability. Each veteran is paired with a mentor who walks alongside them, helping navigate everything from employment and housing to family restoration and personal growth.

A Hand Up, Not a Handout

John explains that real transformation happens when veterans are invited to participate in their own healing. Operation Barnabas asks for buy-in, not perfection. This shared investment creates ownership and lasting change.

One of the most moving moments in the episode is the story of Quentin, a veteran whose journey began in the Duval County Jail. What started as a decision for better living conditions turned into a complete life turnaround through mentorship, faith, and commitment. Today, Quentin is reunited with his family, employed, and even serving as a keynote speaker, proof that redemption is possible.

Programs That Fight Isolation

Beyond mentorship, Operation Barnabas runs outdoor programs, jail ministry, and community connection meetings — all designed to combat isolation, which John notes is as dangerous to health as smoking. Partnerships with churches, businesses, and government agencies allow the organization to bridge the gap between military service and civilian life.

Why This Work Matters Now

With an estimated 22 veteran suicides per day, the mission is urgent. While funding and awareness remain challenges, Operation Barnabas is focused on responsible growth, expanding into more jails nationwide, and ensuring veterans don’t just survive—but thrive.

Final Thoughts: How You Can Be Part of the Mission

Jeff and Travis close the episode with a simple call to action: get involved. Whether through mentorship, volunteering, partnership, or support, everyone has something to offer.
